Eight days built on one idea: have fun. Never two big days back to back. Beach, aquarium, ICON Park, a Halloween party, and a lot of R&R in between.

How this works

Two rules shape every day. If you only remember these, the trip still works.

1

Morning out, afternoon at the resort

It's 95° with a heat index over 100 and a thunderstorm most afternoons. Out early, back by one for naps and pool. Go out again at five if you have it in you.

2

Relax

Focus on stress-free. Nobody has to do everything, no day is packed, and the whole point is making memories — not maximizing them. Enjoy it.

Saturday · Aug 29Arrival

Land and stock up

Landing around 1pm. By the time we've got bags and cars sorted and reached the resort, it's mid-afternoon — so today is deliberately easy.

  • Grocery run or Instacart. Publix on Turkey Lake Road is five minutes out. Full kitchens plus three toddlers makes this the highest-value hour of the trip.
  • Pool. The zero-entry main pool has a shallow sloped edge with fountains bubbling up through it — toddler heaven.
  • Cookout dinner on the resort grills — easiest first-night option for a crew this size. Or Sand Lake Restaurant Row for whoever wants out.

Sunday · Aug 30Explore + pool

Pool morning, easy exploring

Pool in the morning, a little exploring after, early night. Monday is a long one — this day sets it up.

  • Pool opens at 8am. The 8-to-10 window is the best of the day — cool water, low sun, empty deck.
  • International Drive for browsing — ICON Park's shops and promenade, the outlets, Pointe Orlando. Easy in-and-out, all ten minutes away.
  • Or go green: Harry P. Leu Gardens — 50 acres of shaded walkable paths, a rose garden, a butterfly garden and a lakeside lawn the kids can run on. Calm, pretty, and a world away from the tourist strip.
  • Lake Eola Park downtown pairs well with the gardens — swan boats, a walkable loop, and lunch nearby.
  • Back for an early night. Long day tomorrow.

Monday · Aug 31Big day

Fort De Soto

Wheels up by 7:30am. It's two hours each way, and leaving on time is the whole day — an early start means an empty beach and beating the heat.

A shallow protected lagoon with almost no wave action and a wide walkable sandbar — with kids at one, two and three, calm beats clear.

Navigate to North Beach specifically. The park is huge and the entrance gate is not the destination. The other beaches inside are ordinary.
  • Shaded picnic areas and grills. Real restrooms, snack bar, about $5 a car.
  • Pack a cooler — food options are thin.
  • Backup: Clearwater Beach, 35 minutes north. If red tide or the flags look bad we reroute that morning without losing the day.
  • Check FWC red tide status and beach flags before we leave.

Tuesday · Sept 1Light + dinner out

ICON Park, then CityWalk

A recovery day disguised as an activity. ICON Park is ten minutes away, gate-free, with a free parking garage.

  • SEA LIFE Aquarium — 360° ocean tunnel, sharks, rays, touch pools. Sixty to ninety minutes, which is a toddler's exact ceiling.
  • Carousel and the Pearl Express train. Skip Madame Tussauds at this age.
  • Check the Wheel is running before buying any combo ticket — it goes down for annual maintenance.
  • Home by two. Naps.
CityWalk dinner, 5:00pm. Tuesday is one of only two nights all week without Halloween Horror Nights — which means parking is free after 6pm instead of $30 a car. Dinner at The Cowfish or Antojitos, then walk to Toothsome for dessert only.

Wednesday · Sept 2Potential split day

Two separate tracks

A possible split — the adults who want a park day peel off, everyone else has a relaxed resort day. Totally optional, decided that morning.

Volcano Bay + Horror Nights

  • Tt + Casey, with Yvette, David and Kara as maybes.
  • Volcano Bay, security at 8:15 for a 9:00 open. Capacity closures are the real risk.
  • Ko'okiri and Krakatau in the first ninety minutes.
  • Out at 2. Back to Parc Soleil to shower.
  • Horror Nights from 4pm on Scream Early. Official start 6:30.

Everyone else

  • 8–10 pool. Best window of the day.
  • 10–11:30 playground, then lunch.
  • 12:30–3 naps — lines up with the storms.
  • 3–5 activity center: crafts, ping pong, pool table.
  • 5–6:30 grill out. Bed at seven.

Chores worth doing today: laundry in the in-suite washer/dryer, grocery top-up, and start repacking. It's the only day with no departure.

Over to Aqua Sol

Pure recovery and logistics. Both rooms are ours tonight, so there's no checkout clock and no rush.

  • Load up late morning, drive twenty-five to thirty minutes west, check in.
  • Aqua Sol has its own water park — slides, volcano feature, splash area — plus mini golf, paddle boats and a fishing pond. Free with the room.
  • Early night. Friday runs late.

Friday · Sept 4Big night

Mickey's Not-So-Scary

Aqua Sol is fifteen minutes from Walt Disney World — closer than Parc Soleil was. Yesterday's move set this up.

  • Morning: Aqua Sol water park and mini golf.
  • Noon to three: everyone naps. Adults included. Not optional.
  • 4:00pm: into Magic Kingdom on party tickets.
  • 4 to 8:30: trick-or-treat trails and character meets. Mickey and Minnie in Halloween costumes, Tiana, the villains.
  • 9:15: first Boo-To-You parade, then out.
Costumes are allowed for all ages at this party — the only Disney night where adults can wear them too. Pack them.

Saturday · Sept 5Departure

Out early

Labor Day is September 7, so we're leaving on the front edge of the holiday weekend. I-4 and the airport both get bad and security can run over an hour. Add ninety minutes to whatever feels right.

Heading home

Monday

Fort De Soto, with Clearwater as the backup.

They're 35 minutes apart, so if red tide or the flags look bad we reroute over coffee instead of scrapping the day. Every Gulf option is about four hours round trip in car seats — the drive is the real cost, not the entry fee.

Fort De Soto North Beach

Fort De Soto — North Beach

Tierra Verde · 2 hours · $5 a car · The pick

For
  • Calm lagoon, almost no waves
  • Wide walkable sandbar
  • Shaded picnic areas and grills
  • Ranked the top US beach repeatedly
Against
  • Longest drive of the shortlist
  • Calm but less turquoise
  • Must find North Beach specifically
  • Thin food options
Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach

2 hours · paid garages · Backup

For
  • Everyone already knows it
  • Lifeguards, food, chair rentals
  • Sunsets at Pier 60 nightly
  • Easiest place to feed twelve
Against
  • Most crowded, worst parking
  • Clarity good but not the best
  • Most expensive option
Check two things the morning we drive. FWC red tide status — blooms are hyper-local, so Fort De Soto can be unusable while Clearwater 35 miles north is perfect. And the beach flags: purple is marine pests, red is dangerous surf, double red is closed.

Before we go

Book it, in order of how fast it sells out.

Packing

The non-obvious things.

Rash guards

Far better than reapplying sunscreen on a squirming toddler six times a day.

Stroller fans

Heat index over 100. These are not optional.

A wagon

If anyone owns one. Beats a stroller at the beach and at Magic Kingdom.

Cheap ponchos

Storms most afternoons, roughly 2 to 5.

A beach cooler

Fort De Soto's food options are thin.

Halloween costumes

For Friday. Adults too — this is the one night it's allowed.

One more thing: this is the peak of Atlantic hurricane season. Odds of a direct hit are low, odds of a disrupted travel day are not nothing. Book refundable where you can.
